The wait is finally over! After 108 years, the Chicago Cubs have won the World Series. The Curse is broken! This is a great moment in sports history. The Cubs defeated the Cleveland Indians 8-7. After a long wait, they’ve won.
On Oct. 14, 1908, the Chicago Cubs beat Detroit Tigers 2-0 in Detroit. That was the last time the Cubs won the World Series… until Nov. 2, 2016, when the Cubs got a ground ballgroundball to Kris Bryant who threw the ball to Anthony Rizzo to mark the end of the game and the beginning of the celebration. At that moment everyone knew what had just happened. The drought was over, and the curse was over.
The curse of the Billy Goat, was it real? Of course not, but The Cubs lost that 1945 World Series and didn’t get back there until 2016. People ran with the story, but in reality, the Cubs just weren’t good enough until 2016. The Cubs came close in 1984 when they lost to the San Diego Padres in the National League Championship Series, and in 2003, when they lost to the Florida Marlins.
The most notable players of the 2016 postseasonpost season were John Lester, Javier Baez, Ben Zobrist and Kris Bryant. John Lester and Javier Baez were both named NLCS MVPs, Ben Zobrist was named World Series MVP, and Kris Bryant was 2016’s regular season MVP. Other significant players in the 2016 season were Anthony Rizzo, Dexter Fowler and Jake Arrieta. Kyle Hendricks also emerged as an up and coming player. While these players had meaningful contributions during the year, every player on the roster was a valuable asset.
The 2016 Chicago Cubs was a team for the ages. They ended a 108-year-old drought and the famous Billy Goat curse. Was the curse real? No. But the Chicago Cubs were.
